England
I started my trip in London, England. I spent a couple days sightseeing in London before venturing out into the countryside. I booked a B&B in Russel Square which was one block from the Bishop museum. (When I went to Greece in 2001 there were a bunch of artifacts that were missing from the museums. I found a lot of them in the Bishop Museum.) I took a walking tour of Westminster on my second day and saw most of the stuff I had imagined I would find in London. The thrid day was really rainy and I didn't get to snap a lot of photos, so I hopped a train to Bath.
Bath was really cool. Such a huge change from London. I ended up staying two nights because the B&B was so inexpensive and I wanted to take a tour of the Roman Baths. Once I got back I found a great resource of info on Bath here: http://www.touchbath.com/ I met some folks in a pub who had just come from Chester and told me I had to stop by and check it out.
Chester is a walled city, so I when I got off the train I went straight to the tourist info centre and got a walking tour map of the city. It was a two mile walk around the city walls and afterwards I knew I wanted to see more. So back to the Tourist Centre I went and made my B&B reservation. I stayed two nights in Chester. Probably could have done it in one. Lesson learned.
I left Chester and hopped a train to York. I hadn't planned it, but York was another walled city. So around the wall I went, another two miles, and back to the Tourist center. This time I only booked one night. The York Minster had amazing Gothic/Romanesque architecture. (I don't really know the difference and didn't bother to ask.) But I got some photos.
I left York and went up to Newcastle. After walking around town for an hour and not finding the Newcastle brewery I decided to get back on a train.
Berwick-upon-Tweed was a cute little town, the Northermost city in England, and the last train stop before Scotland. So I got off the train and walked around the city. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was windy. If you are planning a trip out to Holy Island then Berwick would be a place to stay. If you're looking for anything else keep going north until you get to Edinburgh, Scotland. :)
